The Telematic Collective, along with harpist Erzsébet Gaal and Big Robot ensemble members Michael Drews and Jordan Munson, presented a telematic music and video concert at the Budapest Palace of the Arts in November 2012. Deal and Gaal were in Budapest, and the rest of the group performed from Indiana. Pictured above is the performance of Goldstream Variations (2012), by Scott Deal, performed by Deal, Gaal, Kent Hanie, Javier Osorio Sanchez and Gayle Jones on cameras. The work utilizes an artificial intelligence application called ml*, created by Ben Smith. Ml* implements adaptive resonance theory, self-organizing maps, and spatial encoding neural nets in the MaxMSP programming environment. The software was implemented and worked in the composition by Javier Osorio Sanchez.

AuksalaqDrama was added to the premiere by the advent of Hurricane Sandy, which forced 2 of the scheduled 7 world-wide venues to cancel their participation in the multi-site, interactive opera about climate-change by composer Matthew Burtner and media artist Scott Deal.
According to a news article on The Weather Channel, “Sandy strengthened before dawn and stayed on a predicted path toward Washington, Baltimore, Philadelphia and New York — putting it on a collision course with two other weather systems that would create a superstorm with the potential for havoc over 800 miles from the East Coast to the Great Lakes. About 2 to 3 feet of snow were even forecast for mountainous parts of West Virginia.” The Phillips Collection, in Washington DC and the Lu Magnus Gallery in New York were the venues forced to drop out.

Auksalaq, the Inupiat word for “melting snow/ice”, provides an in-depth journey into the vast and remote, yet rapidly changing arctic regions of Alaska and Canada. Created by composer Matthew Burtner and producer/media artist Scott Deal, the work integrates artistic expression, scientific information, and social/political commentary into an interactive, multi-dimensional collection of narratives that provide a stirring and sobering commentary on the transformation of the Far North as a result of global climate change.

Performance ensembles included Bit20 (Norway), UT Knox Ensemble (USA), McGill Percussion and Chamber Ensemble (Canada), EcoSono Ensemble (USA), and Telematic Collective (USA). An interactive audience-participation software called NOMADS enabled engagement with the performance in real-time across all the stages. Audience members were encouraged to attend the concert with their mobile devices in order to participate. In October 2011, Internet2, the nation’s most advanced networking consortium, presented the Internet2 Driving Exemplary Applications (IDEA) Award to Scott Deal and Matthew Burtner for their creation of Auksalaq, which was described as “the single best and most important realization of meaningful opera for today’s world”. For more information, please visit the Auksalaq website.

On both concerts, they will be performing original music composed by the members of the group. Butler dance students have choreographed the music and will be shown on screen at IUPUI, and live at Butler University. The performance will consist of a multi-media, live performance with musicians on the auditorium stage along with large-screen projections of dancers live combined with video-artistry. The first concert will take place beginning at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, April 26, in the Auditorium of the ICTC building at IUPUI, 535 W. Michigan St. The second concert, at Butler University, will be held at Lilly Hall studio 310 at 7:30 pm.

This vision fosters new choreography that ventures outside of the conventional format to include the incorporation of media, alternative spaces, and other non-traditional elements. Butler Chamber Dance has been in existence since 2003 under the direction of Professor Cynthia Pratt, and has performed at the Penrod Arts Festival, the Intermedia Festival, the Indianapolis Spirit and Place Festival, Wabash College, Hope College, and with Dance Kaleidoscope.

Since 2007, the Telematic Collective has been coordinated through the Donald Tavel Arts Technology Research Center at Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI). The group consists of graduate and undergraduate students enrolled in the Department of Music and Arts Technology at IUPUI. These students, along with their faculty members, then interface with professionals, other students and interested artists working in music, dance, drama, literature, visual arts, videography, software development, information technology, scientific inquiry and computer engineering. Together these collaborations, focused on computer interactivity and artistic use of telecommunications, create new and original media-enriched works for the performing stage.

Program Notes for Sculptures Musicales

People expect listening to be more than listening … whereas I love sounds just as they are and I have no need for them to be anything more than what they are.

-John Cage

In Sculptures Musicales, a work after an idea by Marcel Duchamp, Cage outlines a very broad concept for a genre of sound art. His score describes what the audience will hear up to a point, but the majority of the details are left to those generating the sounds. The following are the directions found in the score, which contains only text: “An exhibition of several, one at a time, beginning and ending “hard-edge” with respect to the surrounding “silence”, each sculpture within the same space the audience is. From one sculpture to the next, no repetition, no variation. For each a minimum of three constant sounds each in a single envelope. No limit to their number. Any lengths of lasting. Any lengths of non-formation. Acoustic and/or electronic.”

The Salt Lake Electric Ensemble’s approach to the piece involved a prolonged discussion of ideas for individual sound sculptures. Several graphical scores were produced during this phase of the production. Each member of the group then went about producing sounds individually for each sculpture. Finally, the group met for a series of rehearsals where the group sound was refined, and the individual sound sculptures were put into the final sequence.

About SLEE

The Salt Lake Electric Ensemble was formed in June of 2009 with the intention of approaching Terry Riley’s 1964 masterpiece In C electronically. The resulting recording and performances have earned the group critical praise throughout North America and Europe. They continue to engage in the music of 20th and 21st century composers, and plan to record new works and to create sound and light installations in the near future. They are on the web at Sleearts.com.

The personnel of the group changes from project to project. Those involved in the music you will hear this evening include Matt Dixon, Ryan Fedor, Charlie Lewis, Oliver Lewis, and Greg Midgley.

Telematic Collective
An IUPUI-based multidisciplinary arts group, the Telematic Collective creates original works that interweave aesthetic expression with information technology and computer research. Telematic art synthesizes mediums such as live music, dance, drama and visual arts with Internet-based interactive media and performance content. The resulting productions connect media-rich spaces to the real world using modern communication systems to create powerful and evocative experiences. This is a new and highly innovative medium whose possibilities are being explored by research institutions, visualization labs and computing centers worldwide.

Since 2007, the Collective has been coordinated through the Donald Louis Tavel Arts Technology Research Center at Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI).
